Friday's Food For Thought - 3/28/08

Come one, come all! It's a very special Friday's Food for Thought!

We here at Hobson's normally try to avoid matters that are strictly of local importance, but this story is just too good to pass up. As most people who have some knowledge of Harding are aware, almost all students are required to attend a daily "chapel" service which lasts for about a half hour in which there are announcements and then a short Christian worship service of some kind. Since the entire student body as well as much of the faculty gather for this event with such regularity, it becomes the perfect time for students to plan and commit mischievous deeds of one sort or another.

This Wednesday morning, one such deed occurred, and it seems to echo the themes of a previous post on Hobsons. Upon exiting the doors to the auditorium where we meet, I looked down at the ground and was greeted with the sight of fetal pigs. Someone seemed to have strewn them about all of the exits during chapel time, leaving them to be discovered by students on their way to get some breakfast or go to class. Most people were disgusted, but some like me were highly amused at the absurdity of looking down and seeing fetal pigs on the ground.

With that story in mind, here is your fetal-pig themed Friday's Food for Thought!

From USA Today, a slightly older story about a more aggressive prank involving fetal pigs:

Swim team inpales fetal pigs on rivals' car antennas.

From the TV Show Angel, a character named Willow professes her love for fetal pigs:

Willow: It had to be something specific. There's lots of jars in the world. Can't shatter 'em all. Oh, I mean you could, but, good things come in jars - peanut butter, jelly, those two-headed fetal pigs at the Natural History Museum.

[Wesley just looks at her]

Willow: Come on. Everybody loves fetal pigs!

As for a video, I will not bother disturbing you with most of the youtube results I found in a vain quest for an appropriate video. If you really want to see some fetal pig action, just search for it on youtube.

Well until next Friday, keep your mind active, and don't forget to stop and admire the fetal pigs of your life!

I don't know if anyone else noticed this...

But is it possible that whoever placed the fetal pigs at the exits had seen on this week's chapel schedule (available on pipeline) that Jimmy Allen was speaking, and knew (as we probably all did) that he would mention abortion in some way?

I find it highly coincidental that the first time Jimmy Allen has spoken in chapel in years, fetal pigs are waiting at the exits.

I do not know what sort of statement such a student prankster might be trying to make, but I think there was probably some sort of connection here.

I could be wrong.

oh, and chris, i don't doubt your theory. it sounds reasonable.

I noticed that they were on the same day, but I think it was merely coincidence, and here's why:

1) What message do the fetal pigs send concerning Dr. Allen? Obviously they are aborted fetuses and he could have been an aborted fetus, but why put them at the exits of the auditorium? It doesn't make any sense beyond that vague connection because there is not motive.

2) A more plausible reason lies in the source of the fetal pigs: the A&P lab. My roommate told me that they had just finished messing with them in lab the last week, and if that is true, then it provides a much more plausible explanation for their appearance-the frustration or inspiration caused by spending a week with them in a lab environment.

Of course, that evidence is hearsay, because I don't know anyone in the A&P class, and I'm not sure he does either. I think it makes more sense then the pigs being placed merely because Jimmy Allen was speaking in chapel.

Of course, it very well could be a combination of both reasons.

Yeah, I think it was probably a combination of the two things...

"What are you going to will all the fetal pigs we dissected? Wait...isn't Jimmy Allen speaking in chapel sometime this week?"

I'd say it's a very plausible reason for the post-mortem appearance of those little squealers.

I'm just pleased we're still talking about them.

One can never have too much talk of fetal pigs.

That's probably the oddest thing I've heard of on the Harding campus quite honestly...

In fact it is quite the epitome of odd...

weird indeed...
